Nebraska utility extends life of coal plant indefinitely

(KMAland) — The Omaha Public Power District board has voted to extend the life of a coal-fired power plant indefinitely. This after the board had promised to close the facility in September.

OPPD said in 2014 that it would close the facility, which has long been a documented source of air pollution in and around low-income neighborhoods.

Ken Winston, director of the Sierra Club’s Nebraska chapter, called the move by OPPD an environmental justice issue, not only for air quality, but for people who live near the power plant in North Omaha…
