Truck Driver Killed After Semi Tips in Strong Winds on I-80 Near Council Bluffs

A Council Bluffs man was killed Friday afternoon after a semi-truck crashed on westbound Interstate 80 near mile marker 12. Authorities say the crash occurred around 12:03 p.m. when strong winds caused the vehicle to lose control and tip into the median.

According to the crash report, a 2004 Peterbilt tractor-trailer was traveling westbound in the right lane of I-80 when strong winds caused the driver to lose control. The truck attempted to maintain control before tipping onto its driver’s side in the median and striking a cable barrier.

The driver was identified as Mark Douglas Hayden, 56, of Council Bluffs. He was pronounced dead following the crash. Hayden was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision.

The semi-truck came to rest on its driver’s side facing southwest within the median. No other vehicles were listed in the crash report…
