Sentencing for Honduran man charged in Iowa woman’s death

OMAHA, Nebraska — A man who disappeared to Honduras after being charged in the 2016 death of Iowan Sarah Root will serve up to 20 years in prison for vehicular homicide.

Eswin Mejia pleaded no contest to the charges in 2025 when he was returned to the U.S. He was charged in 2016 and bonded out of jail, then disappeared.

Root was killed when in a crash in Omaha on January 31, 2016. Mejia was reportedly drunk and not in the country legally.

His attorney read his statement in court apologizing for his actions…
