Iowa Woman Killed in Omaha DUI Crash; Driver Sentenced to Over 20 Years

An Omaha judge has sentenced a Honduran man to more than two decades in prison for a 2016 drunk-driving crash in south Omaha that killed a young Iowa woman.

Douglas County District Court Judge James Masteller sentenced 29-year-old Eswin Mejia to 20 to 22 years in prison on Monday following his conviction for motor vehicle homicide and failure to appear in court.

The charges stem from a January 31, 2016 crash near 33rd and L Streets in south Omaha. Prosecutors said Mejia was driving under the influence when he rear-ended a vehicle driven by 21-year-old Sarah Root, who was slowing to a stop at the intersection…
