Omaha recycling, waste facilities awarded state grants

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – Five Omaha entities are getting a slice of $7 million in grants awarded to communities all over the state.

On Wednesday, the Department of Water, Energy, and Environment released the list of all 126 grants awarded to support waste and litter reduction projects across Nebraska. The grants program is funded by solid waste fees paid at landfills across the state, as well as fees Nebraskans pay when purchasing new tires — and by retailers required to offset any products that are common sources of litter.

The City of Omaha is getting $375,069 to operate Under The Sink, a hazardous waste collection facility in southwest Omaha; and $27,970 for scrap tire collection. By comparison, the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department was awarded the largest single grant: $494,596 was awarded to maintain and expand its HazToGo hazardous waste center…
