Nebraska schools shut down ahead of snowstorm

Nebraska and Iowa school districts are shutting their doors Thursday as a winter storm bears down on the region with heavy snow and powerful winds. Eight major districts announced closures or schedule changes, affecting thousands of students as dangerous weather conditions develop throughout the afternoon and evening.

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning effective from noon Thursday through 6 a.m. Friday for much of the affected area. Meteorologists warn that accumulating snow combined with wind gusts reaching 40 mph will create hazardous travel conditions, particularly during afternoon and evening hours when many families would typically be on the roads.
