Santana Collins’ smile shines brighter than the vibrant painted flowers and butterflies behind him at Heartland Family Service. Bags covered in lions, koalas, and hippos sit near Santana’s feet, ready to bring women and children joy. The “Pampers and Popcorn” theme offers a moment of comfort and dignity to those who have faced hardships.

“Sometimes they [women] feel judged because of their past, and they love to see Santana. It feels good to give,” said his mother, Taisha, who works as a case manager at Heartland.

The Westside freshman grips his father’s muscled arm as both pose for a photo next to a staff member before visiting his favorite stop, the vending machine. Tim calls his autistic son a “superhero” who wields the power of “authenticity.”…
