Large field fire consumes nearly 40 acres in Mills County Thursday

(Glenwood) — Multiple fire departments from Mills and Fremont counties tackled a large field fire that burned nearly 40 acres in Mills County Thursday afternoon.

Glenwood Fire Chief Matt Gray tells KMA News that his crews, along with the Malvern and Tabor departments, were dispatched shortly before 3:15 p.m. to the field fire between Montague Road and U.S. Highway 275 after a Mills County deputy observed smoke from the area and had gone to investigate the source. Upon arrival, Gray says units found a fast-moving field fire on multiple terrains.

“With the high winds, the fire spread through basically a corn-filled area and approached the house and when we arrived, we were basically protecting the house from catching fire,” said Gray. “The winds were high, the fire was moving pretty quick, it was getting hard to control. so we had other units that came in. We were able to basically get it contained, get it knocked down, and then extinguish any hot spots to prevent any type of rekindle.”…
