A Florida man has pleaded guilty to a mail fraud scheme that defrauded FedEx Corporation out of more than $750,000 through fraudulent reimbursement claims, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Western District of Tennessee announced Monday.
According to court documents, Shaun C. Kavanaugh, 46, of Orlando, orchestrated the plot between June 2015 and September 2018 by shipping packages containing worthless items through FedEx.
Kavanaugh would then falsely report to FedEx that the packages had been misdelivered, enabling him to file reimbursement claims for the supposed value of the contents.
Court records show that Kavanaugh went further by submitting fabricated invoices to FedEx that significantly inflated the value of the items allegedly lost. These false invoices misrepresented the packages as containing high-value goods, despite containing items of negligible or no value.
This deception allowed Kavanaugh to defraud FedEx into issuing substantial payouts that exceeded the actual worth of the shipped items, as noted in court filings.
