ORLANDO, Fla. – Eight local students won awards at the Florida Civics and Debate Initiative, also known as The Great Debate, this past weekend in Orlando, including five students from the Frazer School, two students from Kanapaha Middle School, and a student from Oak View Middle School.
The following Alachua County students placed in the top five in their respective competitions:
- Overall – Middle School Division, 2nd place: Armaan Seth, The Frazer School
- Overall – Middle School Division, 3rd place: Lara Castineyra, Kanapaha Middle School
- Overall – Middle School Division, 4th place: Sara Khial, Kanapaha Middle School
- Impromptu Speaking – Middle School Division, Overall Champion: Josh Kim, The Frazer School
- Impromptu Speaking – Middle School Division, 4th place: Thomas Moywaywa, The Frazer School
- Impromptu Speaking – Middle School Division, 5th place: Ellington Smith, Oak View Middle School
- Impromptu Speaking – High School Division, 5th place: Peter Moywaywa, The Frazer School
- Extemporaneous Debate – Middle School Division, 4th place: Lara Castineyra, Kanapaha Middle School
- Extemporaneous Debate – Middle School Division, 5th place: Sara Khial, Kanapaha Middle School
- Legislative Debate – Middle School Division, 2nd place: Armaan Seth, The Frazer School

This weekend, the Florida Civics and Debate Initiative (FCDI) brought together 420 middle and high school students from 72 schools across Florida and out-of-state to compete in The Great Debate: Florida’s National Civics and Debate Championship (NCDC) in Orlando.
