A federal judge has ruled a Winter Park cop who fatally shot an unarmed but belligerent man at a wedding in 2022 can be personally sued for wrongful death.
The officer killed Daniel Knight, 39, less than two minutes after arriving at Knight’s niece’s wedding in response to a 911 call describing a man who was “irate” and “violent.” During the confrontation, Knight punched officer Craig Campbell and got into an altercation with another officer, Kenton Talton, before Talton shot at Knight seven times at the Winter Park Events Center on Feb. 19, 2022.
Mellisa Cruz, Knight’s fiancée at the time of his death and the mother of his two younger children, is suing Talton personally for Knight’s wrongful death, as well as the city’s police chief, and accusing the city of Winter Park of negligence…
