A native of Nicaragua was arrested after falsely claiming to be working for the Federal Bureau of Investigation and immersed in the investigation of a drug cartel.
A deputy conducted a traffic stop on the driver of a black Chevy SUV, later identified as 57-year-old Nelson Vargas of Haines City, around 6:40 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, according to an arrest report from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. The vehicle had a temporary tag that was not properly affixed. It was also either expired or not assigned to the vehicle.
The vehicle subsequently pulled into Aces Towing’s parking lot, located at 1390 W. North Blvd., Leesburg. While the deputy stepped out of his vehicle, Vargas did the same and began approaching him. The deputy told him to stop and get back in the vehicle, to which Vargas advised that he was with the FBI currently working on a case, the report said.
The deputy asked to see his credentials or ID, to which he provided an expired Transportation Worker’s ID Card, his driver’s license and a police department’s business card with miscellaneous writing on it. During the investigation, Vargas stated he did not need to carry a badge or ID due to working with the Mexican Cartel out of Chile.
