New mixed-use proposals under review to transform Kmart lot into housing

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — A 22-acre vacant lot right in the middle of Kissimmee is set to be the home of a new community space. This lot, located off of West Vine Street, is where the former Kmart and Big Lots stores used to create a shopping space.

City officials said they envision this space filled with homes, retail stores, walking space and more. They’re actively reviewing proposals from three development groups to revitalize the space and created a “mix use” environment.

“In addition to housing, the vision for that site was more a mix use, something that would mix not only housing but also complementary services that support those that would be living there,” Kissimmee Economic Development Director David Rodriguez said. “Space for retail, also open spaces. The community said they wanted to see art space for entertainment, something that was very connected, walkable, kind of a town center feeling.”…
