Orange County approves $49M contract for new animal shelter, largest in Florida

Orange County is moving ahead with construction of a new $49 million animal shelter, a project officials say will be the largest of its kind in Florida when completed in summer 2027.

The Orange County Board of County Commissioners voted this week to award the construction contract to The Collage Companies. At 123,419 square feet, the two-story shelter will house up to 265 dogs on the first floor and 200 cats on the second, with the entire building air-conditioned.

“This new building will be a symbol of the values we hold as a community,” said Orange County Mayor Jerry L. Demings. “We’re investing in a future where animals, staff, and residents will thrive, and I believe we should be proud of this step forward.”…
