Homeless man arrested after allegedly trying to break into dead person’s home

A homeless man in Clermont was arrested for burglary after his latest attempt at trying to break into a dead person’s home.

Deputies responded to a burglary in progress at an undisclosed Clermont residence around 9:45 a.m. Wednesday, according to an arrest report from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. Upon arrival, they noticed the side door to the garage was open. They also saw 48-year-old Scott Ervin Stencel walking in the front lawn and detained him.

The resident explained that this was an ongoing issue. Deputies had already responded Tuesday night and earlier that morning. He mentioned seeing Stencel in the garage at 9:30 a.m. and after checking the Ring camera footage. Stencel went into the garage and back porch at 7:22 a.m. Saturday, the report said.

One of the deputies inspected the property for signs of forced entry and found some pry marks and scuffs on the side door leading to the garage. The resident also provided what seemed to be picking tools to open a door, which were found on a bench with Stencel’s belongings by the front door, the report said…
