Mayor says more than $330,000 in taxpayer funds has been spent to hold ICE detainees at the Orange County Jail

ORLANDO, Fla. — Over the past eight months, Orange County officials say more than 5,000 ICE immigration detainees have been booked into the Orange County Jail.

Housing them costs the county each day, and while the federal government has been reimbursing Orange County $88 per person, per day, county leaders say the actual cost is more than double that, at $180 a day.

For a few months, Orange County leaders have been trying to renegotiate their agreement with the federal government, but there has been little progress. In an effort to expedite a resolution, Mayor Jerry Demings sent a letter to the U.S. Marshals Service this week to request a reimbursement for all costs incurred by the county to house ICE detainees…
