With no dedicated warming center in east Orange County, nonprofit opens temporary location

BITHLO, Fla. — Central Florida is ringing in the new year with cold weather and biting windchills. Warming centers are open again across Central Florida, but in the Bithlo area of east Orange County, the government does not have a dedicated shelter where people can escape the cold.

Tiffany Branson has been homeless for two years. She spent Tuesday night with her son, sleeping in the woods in east Orange County. They slept in a tent, wrapped in several blankets, but on Wednesday night they decided to seek shelter.

“Just keep your head up and anywhere they can give you a safe place to stay and a warm place to stay, go. It’s not worth being out here and possibly dying from the freezing cold weather,” Branson said…
