Communication sciences professor turns final exam into escape room experience

A professor at the UCF School of Communication Sciences and Disorders transformed the final exam for her basic phonetics class into an escape room experience last semester at the College of Health Professions and Sciences’ Rehabilitation Innovation Center.

Dr. Erin Leeming created the escape room, which used the International Phonetic Alphabet, to help reduce anxiety for students who may have ADHD or other diagnoses. Leeming, who has struggled with ADHD while taking exams in the past, morphed the exam into an interactive experience for other students who may struggle with similar issues.

“I wanted to kind of bring something that would allow them to show me what they learned throughout the semester without having to feel that anxiety,” Leeming said. “I wanted them to have something that was more like real life so that they were able to use those more on the spot than sitting and freaking out about writing it down and remembering things.”…
