Parents want teacher fired after alleged hit-and-run that broke 16-year-old’s back

WINTER PARK, Fla. (WFTV) – Parents are calling for a Florida high school to fire a teacher accused in a hit-and-run that left a 16-year-old student with a broken back.

Casselberry Police say 49-year-old Benjamin Fottler, a teacher at Winter Park High School, ran over 16-year-old Landon Cates on his way to school Dec. 11. He was arrested Tuesday and charged with felony hit-and-run.

Police say Fottler made a 911 call hours after the crash, reporting he thought he hit “a sign in the median” while making a left turn.

However, investigators say Fottler actually hit Cates, who was riding his scooter to school. They allege Fottler kept going all the way to work, leaving the teenager lying in the roadway with a broken back, bruises and scratches…
