Ravens vs. Chiefs (and Taylor Swift): Why Isn’t America Rooting for Baltimore?

We look at the chart. We see all that “Honolulu Blue,” and it is easy to understand: Here come the conference title games and America is sick of the San Francisco 49ers and are therefore desirous of an upset by the Detroit Lions.

But why isn’t that same logic working in the AFC?

The Kansas City Chiefs square off against the Ravens in the AFC here in Baltimore on Sunday, and later in the day the 49ers play host to the Lions in the NFC.

America – so proud of being “underdogs” ourselves when it comes to the inception of our nation (Revolutionary War and all that) – is pulling for the “little guy” there. “Everybody” wants Detroit.

But as we get ready for Conference Championship Weekend with the two Sunday games and then Super Bowl LVIII in two weeks in Las Vegas (yes, we’ll be there!), we review a recent graphic released by BetOnline.ag that is based on “Twitter data” …

That pegs the Lions as the clear favorite on a state-by-state basis when it comes to fans with a rooting interest, with 37 of the 50 U.S. states rooting for the Lions.
