Iconic department store shuts all locations after bankruptcy making way for Sierra outdoor retailer

The closure of nearly 300 Stein Mart locations has paved the way for outdoor retailer Sierra to expand its footprint, taking over a vacant space in Kansas City, Missouri. Following Stein Mart’s bankruptcy in 2020, which attributed its demise to changing consumer habits exacerbated by the pandemic, all physical stores were closed, shifting the company entirely online.

Sierra, part of the TJX Companies umbrella which includes TJ Maxx and HomeGoods, saw an opportunity to step in and enhance its presence in the area. The new location at Orchard Corners Shopping Center in Lenexa, Johnson County, marks a strategic move for Sierra, strategically positioned alongside other TJX-owned stores.

Plans are underway for Sierra to occupy a 19,104-square-foot space, pending approval from the city’s planning commission. This move not only reflects Sierra’s growth strategy but also responds to consumer demand for outdoor and activewear options in the region.

Simultaneously, Petco has expressed interest in occupying the other half of the former Stein Mart space, signaling a dynamic shift in retail offerings at the shopping center. With Sierra’s expansion, shoppers can anticipate a broader range of choices, reinforcing TJX Companies’ commitment to meeting diverse consumer needs.
