Thieves steal $500,000 by taking checks from Lenexa mailboxes, police say

LENEXA, Kan. (KCTV) – Police in Lenexa said thieves have stolen nearly $500,000 this year by stealing checks from mailboxes. Those are just the ones they know about in 2025.

The department said it has received numerous reports of checks stolen after they’ve been dropped in a mailbox. It’s a crime KCTV5 has also covered this year.

According to police, the thieves then “wash” the checks. Washing a check means the information written on the check is removed. New info is then added to the check and it is then illegally cashed…
