The Missouri Attorney General’s Office has filed a lawsuit against the City of Kansas City, Missouri, alleging a violation of the state’s Sunshine Law. The lawsuit was filed in Jackson County Circuit Court and accuses the city of failing to respond to a public records request submitted over six weeks ago.
According to the Attorney General’s Office, the request—submitted on March 3, 2025—involved three separate Sunshine Law inquiries seeking receipts, billing statements, and records related to outside legal counsel retained by Mayor Quinton Lucas and other city officials. The city initially responded by stating that a cost estimate for the requested records would be provided within 15 days. However, more than 40 days have passed, and the city has not provided any records, cost estimate, communication, or explanation for the delay.
