Uptick in drownings pushes Johnson County leaders to plead for water safety

JOHNSON CO., Kan. (KCTV) – After nearly twice the amount of fatal drownings have been reported in 2025, Johnson County leaders have pleaded with residents to keep safety in mind.

Johnson County MED-ACT noted that as of Friday, July 11, emergency crews have responded to nearly double the number of drowning-related calls in 2025, compared to 2024. Each tragedy is a powerful reminder that safe swimming is non-negotiable, regardless of age or ability.

“Drowning is one of the leading causes of accidental death in young children, and it can happen in seconds,” said Drew Hysell, MED-ACT Battalion Chief. “By taking a few simple precautions, families can prevent accidents and enjoy their time in the water safely.”…
