After prisoner was killed by cellmate, Kansas court approves $275K settlement

A Kansas judge has approved the state government’s settlement with the family of a man who was killed in prison by his cellmate.

The family of Gary Lee Raburn accepted the $275,000 settlement after previously rejecting a $150,000 offer to settle their lawsuit against the state.

“Plaintiffs allege acts and omissions by Defendant played a role in the causal chain in Decedent’s untimely death,” said a motion to approve the wrongful death settlement. “Defendant denies the allegations, but has offered to settle the claims of Plaintiffs in the proposed Settlement Agreement.”
