Overland Park Police warn residents not to fall for fake warrant scams

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (KCTV) – The Overland Park Police Department says scammers are targeting residents to ring in the new year with fake warrant calls.

Here’s how investigators say the scam works:

  • Someone calls claiming residents or their family members have an outstanding warrant.
  • The scammers use real officer names and fake badge numbers.
  • They even spoof caller IDs to make it look like the call is coming from the police department.
  • Then comes the demand – victims are told to pay immediately through gift cards, cryptocurrency or digital apps to clear the warrant.

Police say it’s all a scam

“The Overland Park Police will never call to demand payment over the phone to resolve a warrant,“ Overland Park Police said in a statement. ”Warrants are served in person or through the court system, not via unsolicited phone calls.”…
