Lenexa neighbors pack hearing on 50-home Habitat for Humanity development

LENEXA, Kan. (KCTV) – Lenexa homeowners packed City Hall Monday night as the Planning Commission considered a proposal from Habitat for Humanity to build 50 affordable homes in western Johnson County.

The hearing drew dozens of speakers on both sides of the issue, with concerns ranging from property values and traffic to the need for affordable housing in a county where the average home costs more than half a million dollars.

What’s being proposed

Habitat for Humanity of Kansas City wants to rezone 16.73 acres of city-owned land near the southeast corner of 86th Terrace and Clare Road to build 50 single-family homes.

The homes would range from 1,800 to 2,200 square feet and be sold at market value using a Community Land Trust model with zero-percent mortgages. Qualifying income for Johnson County ranges from $51,000 to $96,000 per year, depending on household size…
