Cherokee Nation hosts at-large meeting in Kansas

OVERLAND PARK, Kansas – In an effort to foster connection and inform citizens, the Cherokee Nation routinely holds at-large gatherings at cities across the country with higher concentration of tribal citizens.

On March 14, 977 people gathered at Shawnee Mission South High School in Overland Park, Kansas, for a Cherokee Nation at-large gathering.

The event allowed citizens living outside the reservation to renew tribal IDs, register to vote in tribal elections, receive updates on the tribe’s health and education programs and more.

Cherokee Nation At-Large Tribal Councilor Jonny Jack Kidwell said the most meaningful part of at-large meetings is “connection.”

“Dr. Julia Coats and I do our best to represent the 330,000 at-large citizens that are around the world,” he said. “We can’t do that unless we get out and talk to them, meet with them and connect with them. (At-large meetings) give us a great opportunity to be able to see these folks and let them ask questions they may have.”
