Pensacola finds 45 unmarked graves in Miraflores Park

Miraflores Park is the final resting place of at least 45 bodies, city officials announced Tuesday.

Pensacola Historic Preservation Planner Adrianne Walker said a survey using ground penetrating radar confirmed there are at least 45 burials in the park, but there may be more.

The city had previously confirmed that multiple burials existed in the park just a day into the survey in November because the evidence was overwhelming, but it couldn’t release a number until the data from the survey was fully processed. The announcement Tuesday is the first official count of the number of graves in the park.

The survey team only surveyed the western half of the park, where historical research led the city to believe the cemetery’s location was most likely to be. The team will return this month and survey the park’s eastern half.

“There were unmarked burials found pretty close to the edge of the survey area. Because of that, it’s in our best interest to survey the entire park to make sure that there aren’t any additional burials,” Walker said. “And there very well could be.”
