45 unmarked graves found at Miraflores Park in Pensacola

PENSACOLA, Fla. ( WKRG ) — 45 unmarked graves have officially been found at Miraflores Park in Pensacola, according to city officials.

“These are Pensacolians, they’re citizens. We probably have descendants in our community of these people, so we need to treat this with the utmost respect and sensitivity,” Adrianne Walker, the city’s Historic Preservation Planner said.

The burials were found after a ground-penetrating radar survey was conducted on the land.

“They are in a linear fashion, some are a little clustered together, but it looks like your typical historical burial ground that we would expect,” Walker said.

WKRG News 5 was there as the ground survey was being done in November, but with the potential for additional burials at the park, the work isn’t done yet.

“There was a small grouping of burials that were a little close to the survey edge and just to be safe the team made the recommendation to come back, and I also support that recommendation so we can fully understand what’s going on at the park,” Walker said.
