Art is bridging the gap between Pensacola’s “From the Ground Up Community Garden” and the new Blake Doyle Skatepark.
For the past several weeks, artists have been painting murals on the shipping containers used for storage and office space at the garden under Interstate-110.
The containers face the park and before now had been drab. Lead Gardener, Elizabeth Eubanks, commissioned artist Eniko Ujj to create the murals and work with artists to bring it to life.
“The project was to sort of liven them up and to bridge the community between the skate park and the garden,” Ujj explained. “To have people in the community come out and help paint to make it more part of their culture.”
Ujj said they put out a call for volunteer painters and about 10 people stepped up to help, including artist and skater Patrick “Pattysauces” Quintanilla.
Patrick works as an artist, painting murals throughout Pensacola and the country with his graffiti style of expression. He also enjoys skateboarding but spends more time painting than skating, thanks to his “bad knees,” he said. The project gives him a chance to combine two of his favorite activities.
