Pensacola Fire Department puts out blaze at EMR Recycling for second time in 13 months

It took Pensacola firefighters nearly seven hours to put out a fire Tuesday night as EMR Pensacola Southern Recycling battled its second fire in just over a year.

City of Pensacola spokesperson Jason Wheeler told the News Journal fire departments began getting calls about the fire around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday after a scrap pile caught fire. Wheeler said the fire was put out just before 2:15 a.m. with no one suffering injuries.

Wheeler also said some of Southern Recycling’s employees were on scene and used a crane to lift portions of the 50-foot-by-50-foot scrap pile to allow responders to quickly reach the fire.

The News Journal reached out to Southern Recycling Wednesday morning, and they declined to speak about the fire. The employee who answered the phone also declined to answer whether or not employees have returned to work or if the recycling center has returned to normal operations.

The Pensacola Fire Department is investigating the cause of the fire.
