BAY COUNTY, Fla. ( WMBB ) – Sandy Sanders was inspired to join the American Red Cross nine years ago after retiring from the Air Force. Over the years, he’s become the foundation of the Panama City and Pensacola chapter.
Community Disaster Program Manager Andy Cornett nominated Sanders for the North Florida Region Volunteer of the Year award.
Out of 35 counties, from Jacksonville to Pensacola, Sanders won the title.

“If there’s something that needs to be done, he doesn’t I don’t have to ask it. He will rally volunteers together. He will make that happen,” Community Disaster Program Manager Andy Cornett said.
Sanders stepped up during Hurricane Michael when his home in Callaway was completely destroyed.
“When his house was destroyed, it wasn’t just damaged it was destroyed. He stayed with the Red Cross mission taking care of others because he knew, you know what, there’s there’s nothing I can do about my house, but I can help other folks get through this. And that’s what he did,” Cornett said.
