On the sixth day of Christmas, my pal Walter Wallace gave to me a great tip on an Ensley Church that just had the most amazing gingerbread house competition that he had ever seen.
“They were unbelievable,” said Wallace, president of the Sickle Cell Disease Association of Escarosa , who was one of the judges for Living Word Holy Church’s fifth annual gingerbread house competition. “Some of them were so elaborate and I can’t imagine all the time that went into them.”
So here, on the 12th Day of Christmas, are some of the photos from the recent competition at Living Word Holy Church on Broad Street: (You didn’t think we were going to jump right into Mardi Gras without a last glance at Christmas, did you?)
“There’s a lot of work that goes into them,” said church pastor Brenda K. Beasley, whose husband Samuel Beasley founded the church nearly 35 years ago. “Some people build them as teams. I’ve seen the community and the fellowship that (the competition) brings. I have a lot of people who say they aren’t creative, and I tell them it’s not about creativity, it’s about the process.”
