New era of recycling is set to begin in Pensacola | Opinion

When the City of Pensacola made the difficult, but necessary, decision to pause an outdated, mandatory recycling program , it was an adjustment for all of us.

With all 21,000 households receiving recycling cans as part of service, some citizens took it very seriously. Others did not, using it often as a second ‘garbage can,’ causing more than 50 percent contamination of our recyclable efforts. Additionally, the markets for recyclables tanked, leading to many of your attempts to recycle ending up in the landfill anyway due to a lack of recyclable buyers.

In other words, while trying to help Planet Earth, we collectively were doing more harm than good…
