‘A big boom’: Witness describes deadly crash in Gulf Shores after Orange Beach police chase

GULF SHORES, Ala. (WKRG) — This is the last thing Chris Wash ever expected to happen on vacation.

“I was just standing out here in front of the house, trying to get some stuff out of the truck, and saw the car fly by,” said Wash.

Next, it was what he heard that confirmed his fear: “Sounded like a big boom, a big boom.”

Just at the end of West Beach Boulevard, a small silver car had crashed into the concrete barrier surrounding the Laguna Key guard shack. Wash ran towards the crash to try and help.

“It was very clear that the person was deceased, called 911, actually hung up with 911, because as I turned around to come back, there were literally 20 police cars in sight,” he said.

Orange Beach police said an officer had spotted a suspected drunk driver around 1 o’clock Thursday morning and tried to pull them over…
