Pensacola is worth fighting for. I’ve seen it first hand | Opinion

Three and a half years ago I wrote a similar editorial for this paper as the one I write now. Back then I was departing my position as Commanding Officer of NAS Pensacola, and I wanted to give some perspective on the great privilege it was to lead the men and women of the base through some very challenging times, to thank the people of Pensacola for their support, and to talk a little of what I learned.

Today, I find myself in a similar place—this time stepping down as City Administrator. The uniform is gone, but the lessons are no less profound. I’d like to offer a few reflections for you, the citizens I’ve had the honor to serve.

First, I learned just how extraordinary the employees of this city are. Their work is often unseen—done quietly, professionally, and without expectation of thanks. Too often, the only time the public notices is when something goes wrong. If that happens, I ask you to remember they are human beings, doing their best under difficult circumstances. I’ve been disheartened to see dedicated employees disparaged on social media or criticized unfairly. They deserve to be treated with the same dignity and respect as any worker in our community. You can disagree, of course—but please do so with a measure of grace…
