MONTEVALLO, Ala. – For the first time since Nov. 2, 2003, Montevallo Volleyball took down No. 16 West Florida, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon. After dropping the second set for a 1-1 tie, the Falcon took the final two sets to snap a 30-game losing streak against the Argos.
Montevallo opened the afternoon with a quick 4-1 run to take control early before a trio of kills from Maggie McColley, Katie Wilkerson, and Nikol Antova stretched Montevallo’s led to 10-4. The Argos battled back to cut the UM lead down to three at 17-14. With the Falcons’ leading 22-20, the Falcons took the final three points of the opening set, capped by a kill from Mae Mae Beatty, to take a one-set lead.
In a near mirror image to the first, Montevallo jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the second set. With Montevallo leading by five midway through the set, West Florida would rattle off six-straight points to gain control at 13-12. Ellise Hanson, Danielle Greene and Eliza Tyrrell would look to spark a Montevallo comeback late in the second with three-straight kills to cut the lead down to 22-20 but UWF would take three of the final four points of the set to knot the game at 1-1 overall…
