Sheriff credits community support and new tech for 53% homicide drop in Escambia County

ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. — In a year where many communities are seeing violence rise, Escambia County is moving in the opposite direction.

So far this year, 15 homicides have been reported. That’s down from the 32 cases last year.

“I think it’s a multi-pronged approach,” Escambia County Sheriff Chip Simmons said. “We put a lot of bad guys in jail. We have some technology now that we use to allow us to catch people really quickly. They’re not doing any harm when they’re over there in jail.”…
