Pace Resident Emily Shiel Earns National Recognition for Heart Disease Research and Community Involvement

Emily Shiel, a doctoral student from Pace, Florida, is pursuing a Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences at Florida State University’s College of Medicine. She is expected to graduate in Fall 2026. Shiel chose FSU for its biomedical sciences program and collaborative research environment. She focuses on cardiovascular research and aims to make scientific findings more accessible to the public.

Shiel has received a Predoctoral Individual National Research Service Award from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and a Predoctoral Fellowship Award from the American Heart Association. These grants support her dissertation on immune signaling in cardiac diseases and recognize her work as a researcher.

In addition to her research, Shiel participates in community service. In 2025, she presented her research on inflammatory signaling in heart diseases at the Rare Disease Day symposium. The event included Florida legislators, scientists, and people affected by rare diseases.
