ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. (WKRG) — Commissioners in Escambia County unanimously passed two ordinances to keep homeless individuals safer, with new enforcement on panhandling and camping on public property.

In regard to panhandling, the commissioners voted to expand restrictions on where people can stand. The previous rules prohibited anyone from standing on a median less than six feet wide, unless lawfully crossing the road. Commissioners extended that length to 8.5 feet. Their hope is to get more people out of the medians in the middle of busy roads.

In another change, commissioners updated rules on sleeping on public property to include daytime hours.
