Pensacola’s Palafox Street will be closed to drivers for five months during $10M makeover

PENSACOLA, Fla. (WKRG) — Beginning Jan. 5, downtown Pensacola’s Palafox Street will be closed to all drivers for roughly five months as part of a $10 million modernization project aimed at transforming the city’s busiest downtown street.

The New Palafox Project is designed to enhance safety, improve stormwater infrastructure, expand ADA accessibility and give the street a new look. While the closure will restrict drivers, businesses will remain open to pedestrians.

Pensacola Mayor D.C. Reeves acknowledged that there’s never a perfect time for the city to start a project of this size in heavy foot-traffic area.

“Whether we were to do this project today or two years from now or five years from now, there’s going to be inconvenience,” said Reeves. “So, we either would have to decide to never work on Palafox Street ever again, so long that we wouldn’t inconvenience anybody, or at some point, we’re just going to have to take a bite of the apple.”…
