Orlando exhibit to honor Black women’s legacy in Florida, featuring 2 from Escambia County

PENSACOLA, Fla. — Two former Escambia County educators are being recognized in an Orlando exhibit honoring the legacy of Black women in Florida.

Former Escambia County commissioner and retired educator Marie Young was among the chosen women. Former county educator and current UWF associate professor and grammar lab director Mamie Hixon was selected as well.

“The Power of Her Presence: Honoring the Legacy of Black Women in Florida is a powerful cultural and historical exhibition sponsored by the African American Women’s History Month Project, Inc., dedicated to celebrating the lives, leadership, and lasting impact of 56 Black women representing the state of Florida,” according to a release…
