A Pace man began his aggravated manslaughter trial Jan. 13 nearly five years after his 1-year-old son River Campbell died after being left in a van for nearly four hours in the June heat.
Dustin Campbell, 30, faces one count of aggravated manslaughter for his son’s death on June 9, 2021, which prosecutors argued would not have occurred apart from Campbell’s culpable negligence.
“I want you to remember that the defendant is not charged with intentionally causing River’s death,” Assistant State Attorney Stephanie Pace told the jury during Tuesday’s trial. “But the evidence is going to show you that he neglected River by culpable negligence, which … is a gross and flagrant disregard for the welfare and safety of another.”…
