Local Leaders Unite to Oppose Offshore Drilling Off Florida’s Coast

On Saturday, January 17, community leaders, business owners, elected officials, and environmental advocates gathered at the Gulfside Pavilion on Pensacola Beach with a clear and shared message—Florida’s beaches, economy, and way of life are worth protecting.

The press conference brought together voices from across Northwest Florida to stand opposed to offshore drilling and to invite the public to learn how they can help keep drilling away from our shores.

Florida’s coastline is more than a scenic backdrop. It is the heart of our tourism economy, a source of livelihood for local businesses, and a natural treasure enjoyed by families, residents, and visitors alike. Speakers emphasized that offshore drilling poses long-term risks to marine ecosystems, public health, military readiness, and the small businesses that depend on clean water and healthy beaches. While perspectives on energy policy may vary, there was strong agreement that protecting Florida’s coast is a unifying priority that transcends politics.

The event featured a diverse coalition of speakers, each offering a unique perspective rooted in service, stewardship, and community responsibility. Escambia County Commissioner Ashlee Hofberger spoke about the importance of local leadership listening to residents and safeguarding resources for future generations. Commissioner Hofberger stated, “Our beach and our gulf are more than sand and sea—it’s a way of life, a source of income, and our home.”
