Pensacola anti-ICE protest first in wave of Florida rallies planned this week

A demonstration in Pensacola today will kick off a week of anti-government rallies and candlelight vigils across Florida following the weekend’s fatal shooting of an ICU nurse in Minnesota by Border Patrol agents.

Alex Pretti, a U.S. citizen and registered nurse who treated veterans, was shot and killed by a Border Patrol agent after confronting immigration authorities on Jan. 24. Federal officials said Pretti was carrying a gun he intended to use to “kill law enforcement.” Videos from bystanders—and a witness account in court filings—do not show Pretti brandishing a weapon when he approached agents.

Border Patrol commander-at-large Gregory Bovino blamed Pretti for the shooting and said in a news conference the government’s “immigration mission continues unabated here in Minneapolis despite yesterday’s tragedy that was preventable by folks making better choices.”…
