PENSACOLA, Fla. (WKRG) — A multi-organizational research team from the University of West Florida received the 2026 Mark E. Mack Community Engagement award from the Society for Historical Archaeology.

Led by Assistant Director Nicole Grinnan, the Archaeology Institute was praised for its research in Apalachicola, Florida, with the society highlighting its work in community collaboration, engagement, and outreach.
Dr. David Earle, dean of the College of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities, commended UWF’s commitment to collaborative research with and about local communities. Research was funded by the NOAA National Estuarine Research Reserve System’s Science Collaborative.
