Escambia County Grand Jury Indicts Woman for First-Degree Murder

An Escambia County Grand Jury has indicted Jalynda Karie Smith on charges of first-degree murder and tampering with evidence. The case stems from the February 6, 2026 death of Smith’s child, whose body was found in a trash bag along the bay off Lillian Highway. Smith remains in custody at the Escambia County Jail without bond. Her next court date, known as docket day, is set for May 19, 2026. The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation, and Assistant State Attorney Erin Ambrose is prosecuting the case.
