PENSACOLA, Fla. (WKRG) — On the heels of the University of West Florida’s transition to Division I athletics announcement, the university says the transition not only impacts the school but will have much broader economic effects on the Pensacola area.

“I see this transition to D1 sports as yet another complement to the quality of life here in Pensacola and Escambia County,” said UWF Haas Center Executive Director Nicole Gislason. “So, this will help us to just check off one more box as individuals are looking about where to put down roots, where to bring a business.”
Research conducted by the University’s Haas Center reveals that the transition to Division 1 will increase demands for local lodging, dining, and transportation. The study also points towards an increase in employment opportunities.
