Extreme Heat Over, Flood Watches Up For Heavy Rain Tonight Into Tuesday Eastern Pennsylvania, Southeast New York, Hudson Valley & Long Island
The extreme heat has come to an end and last evening’s thunderstorms certainly did the trick. Now we have a cold front approaching and this is an important weather front. First off though for today we will have sunshine giving way to arriving clouds. High temperatures this afternoon will generally reach the upper 80s to around 90 degrees except for South Jersey and Southern Pennsylvania southward where highs will reach the lower 90s.
The less daytime heating today will probably mean severe thunderstorms developing though they might be a little less widespread than yesterday. The Storm Prediction Center is indicating a slight risk for severe thunderstorms covering most of New Jersey, Eastern to South Central Pennsylvania southward into Maryland, Delaware and Virginia. A marginal risk reaches up to Northern New Jersey, the Hudson Valley, Southwest Connecticut and Long Island. Thunderstorms are going to approach this evening and heavy rain becomes the bigger issue. There is a cold front that will near the coast and stall out. We will likely see this front hang around into Tuesday and this means will see showery rains and thunderstorms Sunday night through Tuesday. Note that it may not rain every waking minute but when it does, it could be heavy and local flooding will certainly be an issue. East winds, clouds and showery rains likely mean temperatures struggle to get out of the 70s during the day though some warm spots could briefly hit low 80s in one of those break periods where the sun can poke through the clouds, only to create more instability and self destruct to showery heavy rains again.
